Robert Is Here!

Our lovely friend, Lynn, recommended the stop at "Robert is Here" when we visited the Everglades in March 2010.  It was definitely a good call!  Robert Is Here is a fruit stand with a wonderful story.

At that time, six-year-old Robert was set on this very corner with some of his father’s cucumber crop and told to “Sell ‘em!” Robert sat all day that Saturday and no one even stopped. That evening, Robert’s father decided that “there can’t be that many people who don’t like cucumbers; they must not see this little boy standing here on the corner.”

The next day, Robert’s father placed a sign on each side of the table proclaiming in big red letters “Robert Is Here.” By noon Robert had sold all of the cucumbers and walked home. 

The rest is history...

We tried the Super Sweet Peruvian Kent Mango Challenge - Good, although not quite a Malaysian Mango from my dad's neighbor's garden ;)

We tried many different flavored honeys.  M liked Tangerine and Key Lime.

We all HATED Avocado Honey!!! It was so vile, M couldn't see straight.

How could this happen? Who on earth could devise such cruelty - what a profound waste of good honey.  There were other flavors, such as Mangrove and  Soursop, that were well-intentioned, but really missed the mark.

We bought a sapote which is supposed to taste like "chocolate pudding".  The advice was to wait until it leaks black juice..."No Leak, No Eat".  So, we will update in a few days.

 (Updated:  It did taste like chocolate pudding! But without the sweet fake sugar sweetness.  M said there was a weird undercurrent of "rubbing alcohol" taste, not that he has drunk rubbing alcohol ... we hope... LOL.  I thought the texture was different and it wasn't quite sweet enough.  K thought it was okay.  We agreed that we would probably not buy this fruit again)

We also bought a sapodilla to try.  Update in three days.

(Updated: This has to be THE SWEETEST fruit we have ever tasted!  We all thought it tasted like creme brulee with carmelized sugar.  It was a little too sweet for me but M had no problem eating my share.  The texture was a bit like a mushy apple).

As we were standing in line, we heard the announcement for "Last Call for Milkshakes!"  This sent us scurrying to the milkshake line.

M ordered an Eggfruit (canistel) Shake that was fantastic! K had Key Lime that was TART, sweet and creamy.  What a wonderful way to end the day at the Everglades.
