Pocket Pies

Sometimes, the best treats in one's backyard are discovered away from home.  This was the case with El Porteno's empanadas.  We came across these thin, flaky, delicious pocket pies at a farmers' market in Cupertino (where we picked up our Indonesian goodies from Golden Mar Catering).  "Some of Us" (ahem) wondered if these rather expensive finger food delectables were "worth it".  Ya betcha! (As demonstrated by how quickly "Some of Us" inhaled the flaky morsels ;))

We tried the Carne (Prather Ranch organic dry-aged grass feed beef, pimiento stuffed olives, raisins, hard-boiled eggs), Pollo (Fulton Valley All Natural Chicken, chicken chorizo, raisins, olives), and Humita (organic super sweet corn, roasted red bell peppers).  As summer winds down, El Porteno will soon say goodbye to the Humita empanada until next year, but the Emp de Acelega (Coastal Rainbow Chard, Gruyere, Pine Nuts & Golden Raisins) will take its place.  OH YUM.  And fortunately for us, we won't have to travel as far as Cupertino when the empanada midnight munchies strikes - they've been in San Francisco since 2007.

A small side salad with fig balsamic vinegar and olive oil to go with our finger food.  Mmmmmmm.....  we're definitely making up for 5 weeks of "road trip food"!
